Bigger Picture
“Going Green” is a mentality and a way of life that attempts to reduce an individual’s and society’s use of the Earth’s natural resources. It’s often referred to as “sustainable living,” which simply means reducing our carbon footprints by doing simple things like altering our methods of transportation, energy consumption, and diet.
At PPE, we want to reduce our carbon footprint, one step at a time.
You know it - reduce, reuse, recycle.
What we do
- Provide port-a-potties that use only environmentally friendly sanitizer solution and toilet paper made with recycled content
- Support local small businesses by, when at all possible, offering only locally grown or manufactured products at our events
- Run a nearly paperless operation - you won’t find race brochures or mail-in entries here
- Use apparel made with bamboo and organic cotton, since the synthetic fabrics in many tech t-shirts are made with harmful chemicals
- Offer prizes for athletes arriving to our races via carpool, bicycle, public transit, or walking
- Use only 100% compostable and biodegradable cups and recycle every cup, every bottle, and energy bar wrapper used at every race
- Request voluntary recycling of used race bibs for our future events
- Partner with forward-thinking charities and companies to offer opportunities like a shoe recycling program at each race, including a raffle ticket/discount program for race participants who donate to the cause
- Offer reusable shoppping bags as your registration “goody bag” so you can take it home with you and keep it in your car to use every time you go shopping
- Look for new opportunities daily to reduce our impact - if you have an idea, email us!
What you can do
- Participate in eco-friendly races (ask us, we just may know of one or two)
- Reuse bottles, rather than throw them away
- Buy powdered sports drink, then mix it yourself. That’s one container rather than 15 individual packets or bottles!
- Wash your apparel in cold water and hang dry (energy savers)
- Buy local. The concept of buying local is simply to buy food (or any good or service) produced, grown, or raised as close to your home as possible, thus minimizing the energy and fuel costs of getting food from where it’s grown or manufactured to the grocery store shelves
- Carpool or use alternative methods of transportation to races/group workouts
- Carry a bag with you on shorter runs and pick up any small trash items that may be littering your route, then recycle them if possible!
